How Acupuncture Can Help Your Mental Health

Have you been suffering from bouts of depression, anxiety, or general malaise? Are you unable to enjoy activities you normally take pleasure in, simply because your mind is preoccupied and your body is in a state of discomfort?

If you answered "yes" to any of the above, you aren't alone. In fact, majority of adults suffer from mental health issues that affect their daily lives. Whether you have a diagnosed condition, such as generalized anxiety disorder, or you have just been in a rut and stressed about work or school, it's time to make a change.

For starters, acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment method that offers a variety of benefits without being invasive or causing harmful side effects. Not only can acupuncture relieve physical pain, but it can also provide holistic improvement on your mind and body.

Read on to learn more about acupuncture, its benefits, and what to expect during each session.

What is Acupuncture ?

Acupuncture has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine and aims to alleviate both bodily and emotional discomfort. According to this practice, there are hundreds of points on your body that are responsible for regulating the flow of energy, known as qi. This energy flows through pathways that connect these points, known as meridians.

It's believed that these pathways become clogged over time, disrupting our energy flow and leading to mental and physical discomfort. In order to re-establish the person's energy flow and holistically improve their well-being, an acupuncturist will insert tiny, metallic needles into various points along these meridians.

These needles will stimulate the nerves and muscles, promoting a release of chemicals that accelerate healing. Although this might sound painful, the needles cause minimal discomfort as they only penetrate the uppermost layer of your skin.

Benefits of Acupuncture for Mental and Emotional Health

There are a number of acupuncture benefits associated with mental health, ranging from increased mood, decreased levels of anxiety, and a general improvement in your quality of life. Specifically, acupuncture has been shown to help patients with a range of diagnosed conditions, including depression, PTSD, and panic disorder.

As mentioned earlier, acupuncture is thought to work by stimulating the body and encouraging the release of endorphins. These chemicals help regulate a person's emotions and calm their minds, which is why many people choose acupuncture for their anxiety . While some people find benefits after just one treatment, acupuncture is most effective when done on a regular basis.

What to Expect During Your Acupuncture Session

During your first acupuncture session, you will sit down with your acupuncturist and discuss your needs and treatment goals. Next, the acupuncturist will begin inserting the needles into various points on your body. You should not feel the needles due to their small size, but you are nevertheless required to lay motionless so they don't fall out

Typically, the needles will remain in place for up to 20 minutes, and then the acupuncturist will slowly remove them. Immediately after the procedure, you should feel rejuvenated and refreshed. However, it's recommended to schedule regular appointments so you can experience the full benefits of the practice in the long run.
