Massage Therapists Answer Questions You Might Be Too Embarrassed to Ask

Getting a massage is a deeply personal experience. Unless you attend the same registered massage therapist for years, you may not feel comfortable asking certain questions. Indeed it may be hard enough to feel exposed or be touched by a stranger.

So, we have tackled a few of the most common awkward questions asked in massage therapy offices and spa therapy rooms.

How Much Clothing Should I Remove?

How much clothing to leave on will depend on the type of massage you are about to receive. First, you must consider that massage oil will soak and damage any clothing. Second, your clothing may be more in the way than helpful, and your therapist is only interested in making you feel comfortable.

For instance, a full-body massage will require unimpeded access from head to toe. In that case, you may wish to leave your underwear on, but be prepared to be fully undressed. Upper body, lower body, or foot massages will be entirely different. If your massage therapist doesn’t direct you, feel free to say you have no idea what to do.

Furthermore, you won’t need to defrock in front of your registered massage therapist. Instead, they will respectfully leave the room and provide you with warmed sheets for discretion while you lay on the massage table. They expertly know how to move the sheet for access while maintaining modesty.

Ultimately, how much clothing to keep on is up to you. However, if you aren’t comfortable, ask if your therapist can provide a fully-clothed, oil-free massage when you schedule your appointment.

What Happens if I Fall Asleep?

Falling asleep is the ultimate sign of deep relaxation—and is entirely normal. It happens all the time!

Should you fall asleep, they will continue the massage for the allotted duration and softly wake you when it is over. Besides, the more relaxed you are, the more beneficial your massage therapy is.

By the way, it also doesn’t matter if you snore, drool, startle, or pass gas; they are all considered natural bodily functions that no one needs to feel embarrassed about.

Can I Talk?

For some, spa therapy is the chance to unwind and zen out in silent bliss. Others are interested in the process, giving directions, and even having a friendly chat during their massage.

It is your massage, so you can be as talkative or quiet as you wish. However, your therapist wants you to speak up if you are uncomfortable, too hot or cold, or if something is painful. They don’t expect every client to be the same, nor do they want you to endure any element of your treatment in pain.

What Happens if I Need to Use the Washroom?

Using the washroom before the start of your massage is wise, but for some, the timing isn’t perfect, and they need to use the bathroom during the session. Believe it or not, your massage therapist would prefer you say something and excuse yourself rather than become tense from trying to hold it.

Communication is the Key

Believe it or not, your therapist’s goal is to make you feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible— not to make you feel like an idiot for asking questions or being nervous. So whether you need massage therapy for medical reasons or want a spa therapy experience, your questions are valid and welcomed.
